Internet Addiction

Internet addiction, or Internet addiction disorder (IAD), is a behavioral affliction marked by compulsive and uncontrolled use of the Internet, significantly disrupting daily life. This dependency can manifest in various forms, such as online gambling, cybersex, video gaming, and social media engagement. While regular Internet use is integral to many aspects of modern life, it becomes problematic when individuals find themselves unable to control their usage, persisting despite negative consequences. Signs of Internet addiction disorder include excessive online activity, staying online longer than intended, lying about Internet use extent, unsuccessful attempts to limit use, neglecting relationships, disruptions in work or academics, and experiencing guilt or frustration. Psychological withdrawal symptoms, like heightened anxiety when unable to access the Internet, may also be present.

Identifying the causes of Internet addiction is complex and multifaceted. Current research suggests that genetic, biological, and interpersonal factors may contribute. Neurochemical abnormalities, a history of mental illness or personality disorders, and a personal or family history of addiction are among the potential influencers. The increased prevalence of mobile technologies and widespread Internet accessibility is not considered a sole cause, indicating that various elements may contribute to the development of Internet addiction. The quality of real life theory posits that individuals facing challenges or dissatisfaction in their offline lives may turn to the Internet as an escape, seeking refuge from reality. Consequently, those dealing with stress or unhappiness may be more prone to using the Internet as a coping mechanism. As technology continues to advance, understanding the intricate interplay of factors contributing to Internet addiction becomes increasingly crucial in developing effective prevention and intervention strategies to address this growing concern in our digitally connected society.
